Edible oil cannot be added with ethyl maltol

Ethyl maltol is a broad-spectrum and high-efficiency flavoring agent, which is widely used in the processing and production of compound flavors, food, tobacco and daily cosmetics. However, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Food Additives Committee of the World Health Organization stipulate that "the average daily intake of ethyl maltol cannot exceed 2 mg/kg based on body weight. Excessive consumption will cause damage to the liver and kidneys of the human body."

It can be seen that although ethyl maltol is a good flavoring agent for meat products, bread, cakes, jelly, beverages, candies, biscuits and other foods, it is clearly stipulated in the "National Food Safety Standard Food Additives Use Standard" (GB2760-2014) , "Vegetable oils and animal oils shall not be added with food spices and flavors". Therefore, the market supervision department has already included ethyl maltol into the supervision scope of edible vegetable oil. Consumers who have doubts about the edible oil they buy can be sent to the relevant agencies for inspection and testing. Once found, they can call 12315 to complain or report.

There is no need to over-pursue grade when buying edible oil

Edible oils can usually be divided into four grades: one, two, three, and four. The higher the grade, the higher the degree of refining. Many consumers often mistakenly believe that the higher the level, the better.

In fact, oil refining refers to processes such as degumming, deacidification, decolorization, and deodorization of crude oil. Removal of impurities such as phospholipids, free fatty acids, pigments and odor substances, etc., can prolong the storage properties of edible oil and improve the sensory quality of edible oil. However, the refining process also causes the loss of healthy active substances in the oil, such as vitamin E and plant sterols. In fact, whether it is a first-grade oil or a fourth-grade oil, it is sufficient if it meets the national health standards, and consumers do not need to pursue the grade of edible oil excessively.

Frequently changing the type of cooking oil is good for health

The Jiangxi Provincial Market Supervision Bureau reminds consumers that there are two methods for making edible oil: pressing and leaching. The squeezing method directly separates the oil from the oil by physical pressure, which has the characteristics of green and pollution-free; while the leaching method uses a solvent to extract the raw materials at a high temperature, which has the characteristics of high oil yield and low production cost. The oil produced by the two methods meets the national quality and hygiene standards after refining, and there is no essential difference.

However, different vegetable oils have different fatty acid composition and different nutritional characteristics. For example, tea oil and olive oil have higher monounsaturated fatty acid content, while corn oil and sunflower oil are rich in linoleic acid. Therefore, it is recommended that consumers change the type of cooking oil frequently, and eating a variety of vegetable oils is more beneficial to their health.
